Minister of Arts & Sciences Warrant Letter (at home)
Received e-mail today from Mesterinde Karen Larsdatter, the Kingdom Minister of Arts & Sciences confirming my warrant as the Minister of Arts and Sciences for the Shire of Roxbury Mill.
13th of June 2006 Roxbury Mill Aspen Hill, Maryland
Shire Business Meeting (at Lower Ravenspur)
The shortest business meeting I can remember and one of the lowest turn-outs. Melisande was unable to send out a notice that the meeting was happening due to computer problems. Teresa the Exchequer reported that the Shire's account had grown. Æþelwine explained that he had corresponded with the Kingdom Minister of Arts & Sciences, Mesterinde Karen Larsdatter about his lost warrant. Melisande agreed to sign a second one and try the postal service once more. Grainne spoke some about two newcomers to the Shire, at least one of which had attended the Highland River Melees. There was some discussion about the Gristmill, updating the Shire's web site, and merchanting drinks at the upcoming Novice Tourney. (Melisande, Vittorio, Grainne, Teresa and me).

Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )

Our twenty-first scriptorium. I continued painting my Kraken scroll, using a borrowed tube of acrylic Winsor-Newton Antique Gold suggested by Enequy the Dubious! Enequy continued to work on his overly complicated diagonally-crossed scroll. Vittorio worked on his ever-shrinking penmanship. Gwenhwyvar practiced her calligraphy. Teresa worked more on her Award of Arms blank. Anne worked diligently on her scroll facsimile. (Anne, Enequy, Gwenhwyvar, Vittorio, Teresa and me).

Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )

Our twentieth scriptorium. I continued painting my Kraken scroll, touching up the sailors, the ship, and the waves. Teresa worked on her Award of Arms blank. Vittorio practiced his penmanship on a copy of his scroll. (Vittorio, Teresa and me). [180]

9th of May 2006 Roxbury Mill Aspen Hill, Maryland
Shire Business Meeting (at Lower Ravenspur)
Discussed aftermath of "Night on the Town" and our upcoming October archery event. Teresa announced that she is now the warranted Exchequer for the Shire. The rest was pretty much gossip. (Melisande, Vittorio, Grainne, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Aelfwynn, Teresa and me).
27 of April 2006 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )

Our nineteenth scriptorium was again quiet. Neither Gwenhwyvar or Enequy were able to show. Vittorio began practicing the calligraphy for the scroll he's been working on. I began painting the Kraken I've been working on. Teresa inked the margins and medallions of the scroll I had pencilled in last meeting. Anne showed and worked on the Award of Arms she's been re-working. We also got to see some photographs of dresses and Regia Anglorum activities that she brought with her. (as above)

13th of April 2006 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )

Everyone worked on their various projects. Anne came late and began working on a project as well. I finished pencilling in a scroll that Gwenhwyvar had done calligraphy for, and Teresa was going to ink and paint. Vittorio finished inking his large scroll. Enequy puzzled and puzzled about a Heart of Steirbach scroll he was preparing to do. Gwenhwyvar worked more on her calligraphy despite a headache. (as above)

14th of March 2006 Roxbury Mill Aspen Hill, Maryland
Shire Business Meeting (at Lower Ravenspur)
A largish business meeting in the cellar of Lower Ravenspur was held to discuss the impending April Shire/Lochmere event, A Night on the Town. I have mixed feelings about the event as it is a Shire event in name only. It will not be held in the Shire, it will not be manned by Shire folk (excepting Melisande and Michael the cooks and Gregge the archery marshal), we were not allowed to change the name (as it's a rapier event, which almost no one in the Shire does), the autocrat remains unchanged (Grainne was due to host the Shire's next event), the archery competition is being relugated to some back area because the rapier people need three locations, and the Arts & Sciences activities do not require (or want) my participation. The event is unashamedly continuing as planned (as the annual Lochmere rapier event for Northern Atlantia) with Shire funding and a small byline on the 4" x 5" handout. Near the end of the meeting, Timothy made mention of the upcoming Needwood Games III on October 21st. Melisande is opposed to the use of the roman numerals for anything except Pennsic. (Melisande with Michael, Alyce and Freddie (both of Lochmere), Vittorio, Grainne, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Timothy, Aelfwynn, Violante with Jessica, Teresa and me).
9th of March 2006 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )

Our seventeenth scriptorium was relatively quiet. I worked on drafting out the design for a scroll that Gwenhwyvar had calligraphied and Teresa was due to paint. Vittorio continued work on his leafed columns and shields scroll. Teresa worked briefly on her Spanish bordered scroll before switchign to inkle weaving. Gwenhwyvar continued her calligraphy practice on vegetable parchment. (as above)

23rd of March 2006 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )

Not many attended our sixteenth scriptorium. I finished penning the Kraken scroll which I started during the last meeting. Vittorio continued working on his scroll of leaves and columns. Teresa put some finishing touches on her Spanish bordered scroll. (as above)

26th of January 2006 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )

Our fifteenth scriptorium had the typical turn-out, minus one. I worked on my Kraken scroll and now have to sit and think about how I want to finish it (before outlining and painting). Enequy worked on a new scroll for his one-a-week challenge. Vittorio continued working on his scroll, leafing around a column and shield. Teresa worked more on her scroll. (Enequy, Vittorio, Teresa and me)

12th of January 2006 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
Our fourteenth scriptorium had a prety good turn-out despite Teresa being sick and crashing before the meeting. Cassandra also, was unable to come. I worked on a Hippocampus sketch which ended up being being much larger than I wanted it to be. Enequy claims that going over it with blue wash could salvage the otherwise pencil drawing, we'll see. Vittorio continued work on his scroll's Atlantian shield. Enequy painted a scroll that he brought. Gwenhwyvar completed the calligraphy of her first written scroll. Beatrix worked on something she brought as well. (as above)
10th of January 2006 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Shire Business Meeting (at Teresa and Æþelwines')
We held our first Shire business meeting at our house due to continuing renovations at Lower Ravenspur. We discussed a good many things while Darwin and Mollie charged around everyone's feet. Foremost was the discussion of an upcoming Shire event. Grainne expressed some frustration at not being able to find an alternative affordable site. In the end, it was decided that both Gwenhwyvar and Vittorio would look into some leads they offered. In attendance was Cassandra, who had not played in early ten years. Several officers were absent, including Helena, Marlin, Miguel, and Aelfwynn (Melisande, Vittorio, Grainne, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Cassandra, Teresa and me) .
7th of January 2006 Dun Carraig Hollywood, Maryland
Kingdom Twelfth Night (at Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department Hall)
A nice day in a great hall. We arrived early to catch the morning court and watch Mika Longbow be awarded his Pelican, and to see Violante be put on vigil for her Laurel. Teresa and I, and Vittorio took turns standing guard at Violante's tent, holding spears and eating the food. Despite a long day, things were happening all day. Feast was very good. We shared a table with Vittorio, Isabella d'Angelo, Ragnar and Annika, Grainne, and William de Younger. Following the event, we learned that somone had purloined the mead gift we had brought for Violante. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Cassandra, Catarina, Sean and Elisabeth, Roland and Theodora, William, Gregor and Beatrix, Sorcha, Isabella, Tristan, Enequy, Miguel and Violante, Mika, Vittorio, Grainne, Teresa and me, and many other Kingdom folk).
4th of December 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
My first archery practice in a while (bow is still unrepaired). I stood-in for Gregge the Archer as the marshal for the Sunday practice. Using a string that Gregge provided me, I finally used my Iolo crossbow that has been gathering dust these last six or more years. I shot okay, but not fast enough to finish a Royal Round without holding everyone else up. Some of my bolts were flying death-spirals toward the target; very fun to watch, but not real accurate. The archers did upwards of four Royal Rounds before calling it quits on this cold but pleasant morning. Thomas of course shot the high score for the morning, with an 87. (Thomas, Rowan, Gregor, Teresa and me).
19th of November 2005 Stierbach Manassas, Virginia
Holiday Faire (at Prince William County Fairgrounds)
On the one year anniversary of my Marshal-in-Training with Lord Mika, I shot absolutely no arrows; I didn't even bring my bow. I spent the whole day wandering from merchant table to table conversing with Teresa, Vittorio, and [Sarah]. There was much explaining to do because it was [Sarah]'s first event.  Later, [Kate] also showed, but I'm not sure whether this was her first event. We sat for a while and listened to a musical trio on the violin, flute, and guitar which were quite entertaining. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Collum, Sean and Elisabeth, Enequy, Miguel and Violante, Mika, Timothy, Vittorio, [Sarah], Grainne, Teresa and me, and many other Kingdom folk).
10th of November 2005 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
Our thirteenth scriptorium gathering. Everyone worked diligently on their respective projects. Teresa showed-off her new (and cheap!) copy of Codex Illustres (now with a different title) that she scored on Amazon. I am nearly done outlining the scroll I've been working on. (Enequy, Gwenhwyvar, Vittorio, Teresa and me)
8th of November 2005 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Shire Business Meeting (at Roland and Theodora's)
After a cancelled business meeting last month the shire met to discuss business and the small matter of Storvik jumping on our date for the Shire birthday after Sean and Elizabeth's promises at our June meeting to work with us to avoid conflicts. At Theodora's it was discussed that Storvik might not have had a choice in hosting the Tournament of Chivalry because the Crown may have "asked them" to do it. It was decided that we would push the birthday back a couple weekends. (Melisande with Michael, Aelfwynn, Vittorio, Grainne, Gwenhwyvar, Theodora and Roland, Teresa and me)
27th of October 2005 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
Yet another scriptorium with everyone working on their respective works. Newcomers [Cathryn] and [Chuck] arrived toward the end of the session and spoke with us at length. The two had recently returned from living in Drachenwald (near York) where she was apprenticed to a Laurel scrivner. She showed us a beautiful scroll that her Laurel had made for her over the course of ~700 hours. Everyone was impressed, but the evening was getting late and things soon wrapped-up. ([Cathryn] and [Chuck], Gwenhwyvar, Vittorio, Teresa and me)
23rd of October 2005 Bright Hills Westminster, Maryland
Second Annual Needwood Games and Feast (at Falcon Ridge Farm)
A very nice day found a moderately-sized group of Needwood archers gather at Stan's orchard above Westminster. We spent most of the morning setting-up numerous targets and the rest of the day shooting them. The day ended with a pot luck feast and standing around a small fire. I won the Bowman category and received gift/awards for maintaining the Needwood site and winning the the aborted Needwood challenge. At the day's end we noticed that both my bow and Gwenhwyvar's X-200 were beginning to split, and would likely be retired from further competitions. (Stanton, Timothy, Saethryth with Grygg, Arnfriðr, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Thomas, Teresa and me)
15th of October 2005 Storvik Upper Marlboro , Maryland
Storvik Baronial Birthday (at Patuxent River Park)
A good day in the park. Cian ran the target archery for the Barony of Storvik and was drummed into the King's Missiliers for his efforts. There was also an equestrian competition, heavy weapons fighting, and combat archery. Thomas managed to weave between some fighters in a hill fight and peg some poor thug in the grill to the delight of many. The target archery field saw the public debut of Æthelwine's Revenge, a ball and spring target that I have not yet been able to hit. My longest distance arrow of the day was 170 yards with a #35 bow. Ethelfleda did well in the equestrian activities. The Royals Janos and Rachel also showed, making yet another venture to the northern reaches of their realm. (Ruaidhri, Timothy, Cian, Ethelfleda, Finn, Joceyln, Sean and Elizabeth, Gregor and Beatrix, Teresa and me, and other kingdom folk).
13th of October 2005 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
More of the same. Worked more on roughing-out the scroll I'm working on. Gwenhwyvar continued practicing her calligraphy. Vittorio continued roughing-out the columns and shields of an Award of Arms. (Gwenhwyvar, Enequy, Vittorio, Teresa and me)
6th of October 2005 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland

More of the same. This was the 10th scriptorium to be held at our house. (Gwenhwyvar, Enequy, Vittorio, Teresa and me)
11th of September 2005 Roxbury Mill Takoma Park, Maryland
Takoma Park Folk Festival (at Takoma Park Middle School) - Photos
Both the Shire of Roxbury Mill and the Barony of Storvik set-up side-by-side pavillions at the Takoma Park Folk Festival to invite festival-goers to learn more about the SCA. Our participation was organized by Grainne, our Shire's soon-to-be Chateleine. It was a hot but entertaining day. We got to talk to hundreds of passerbys and hand out many, many brochures. The Shire had two tables of magazines, hand-outs, weaving tools, bits of armor, and an example of calligraghy and illumination. Standing in front of the tables was my suit of armor and a 15th cent. Spanish dress that Violante made for Twelfth Night. The SCA had a very good showing making it one of the more popular stops at the Festival (Vittorio, Theodora and Roland, Violante, Grainne, Helena, Melisande, Grainne and Grifin, Ynes, Sean and Elizabeth, Genevieve (Not-the-Cook), Johanna with [son], Teresa and me, and other Barony folk ) [160]
8th of September 2005 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
A well-attended and late-running Scriptorium. People seemed to accomplish quite-a-bit. I was a bit under-the-weather so didn't accomplish much more than drawing a tiny tree for Teresa's Award of Arms. Enequy introduced two newcomers from Steirbach to the group, [Karen] and daughter [Sharon] (or maybe the other way around). Both Vittorio and Gwenhwyvar worked more on their respective calligraphy. Teresa finished her Spanish-style scroll, which now awaits lettering. Enequy painted and helped the newcomers with their projects. (as above).
7th of September 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
I ran another Needwood practice this Wednesday evening after a day at home, sick. In my illnesss however, I was able to craft a few novelty shoots to use in addition to a Royal Round or two. We shot at hanging stuffed animals, a water-bag shoot, and we tried to do a Ouija Board shoot in the dark. The weekly challenge was won handily by Ulric. Hopefully Timothy will be around next week. (Ulric, Gregor, Cian, Teresa and me).
25th of August 2005 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
Several people showed for our eighth Scriptorium. Vittorio and I worked on calligraphy. Teresa worked to complete her Spanish scroll, making adjustments to make it specific for a particular award. Enequy and Gwenhwyvar worked on their projects as well. (as above).
24th of August 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
The first Needwood practice after Pennsic saw Teresa shooting very well, breaking her high score "twice". Timothy's 12-week challenge however was won by [Chelsie] who beat her high score by almost 50%. The practice continued until almost dark. (Timothy, Ulric and Ethelfleda, Cian, Stanton and [Chelsie], Teresa and me).
21st of August 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Gregge returned from Pennsic to marhsall the Roxbury Mill practice. I did not shoot very well. (Ulric and Ethelfleda, Cian, Thomas, Stanton with [Chelsie], Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Teresa and me).
17th of August 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
We took a break from Timothy's 12-week challenge in time for Cian to shoot some of his personal best. I marshalled for what will probably be th elast time for a while. I shot very, very poorly as my own bow started making bad guitar sounds; after the second Royal Round when I noticed that the string was coming apart. I sat-out the last Royal Round while the others shot into the late and darkening evening. (Ulric and Ethelfleda, Cian, Teresa and me).
14th of August 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
My second marshalling of the Roxbury Mill practice was not quite as easy as the first, but it wasn't difficult either. We had a surprising turn-out given that Pennsic is in full swing. Thomas showed again, and tried his hand at shooting a period bow. Teresa shot consistently well. I did not. Several people left after the first Royal Round due to the heat. (Ulric and Ethelfleda, Cian, Thomas, Stanton with Chelsie, Rowan, Teresa and me).
10th of August 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
This humid evening coincided with the first week of Pennsic, so attendance was very light. Timothy and I shot a series of different shoots, including three Royal Rounds to continue Timothy's 12-week challenge. For the second week in a row, I won the challenge, this time by shooting my best score since January 2004 (60 pts) despite a terrible timed-round (13 pts). A shoot we created used a smaller concentric target and a box on a string. The box rested precariously on top of the hay bales, both archers began shooting at the same time, the first to hit the box got 3 pts., the box would usually fall and begin swinging in front of the target, from that point forward the box was worth nothing and only the target counted. We did this shoot three times before starting the Royal Round. (as listed above)
7th of August 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A small turn-out provided me with an easy job for my first Sunday marshalling. Gregge was at Pennsic and I had volunteered to stand in for th enext few weekends. I didn't shoot particular well, though Thomas of Storvik shot on his 3rd or 4th round. Cian's bearing of the water cooler made the morning's six Royal Rounds possible. I also used the new scoring sheets I made, which may be modified to accomodate another two rounds. (Timothy, Ethelfleda, Cian, Thomas, and me).
3rd of August 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
This warm evening found Timothy, Mark, Ethelfleda, Teresa and me at the range. We shot the standard variety of novelty targets and then proceeded to do two Royal Rounds as part of the Timothy's 12-week challenge. The idea is that every practice, the one person who beats his Royal Royal average by the most points wins the day. At the end of 12 weeks, the person that has won the most days wins the challenge. On this first day of the challenge, I happened to win by shooting over my average by 7/10ths of a point. It's not much, but it raises my average, slightly. (as listed above).
31st of July 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A good-sized turn-out this Sunday. Several people showed early to get warm-ups underway which were followed by 3-4 Royal Rounds. I didn't shoot particularly well. Rowan let me shoot a couple of arrows using his 50# longbow after the practice. At practice's end we took Gregge's supplies, because I will be marshalling the next three Sundays while everyone else is at Pennsic. (Timothy, Rowan, Saethryth with Grygg, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, [Chelsea], Giovanna, Ethelfleda, Mark McGroyne, Teresa and me).
28th of July 2005 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
Our seventh Scriptorium was well-attended though a couple regular's weren't able to come. Beatrix worked on gold-leafing. Gwenhwyvar showed everyone the Golden Dolphin she was awarded, and worked on calligraphy. Vittorio worked more on his small calligraphy. Teresa worked on her Spanish-style scroll. Chon showed for the first time, and worked on a new promissory. I worked on some Old English calligraphy as well. (as listed above).
24th of July 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
This was an interesting morning for me. I decided to use Teresa's old arrows since their in better shape than my own. In the first couple practice rounds I broke two the arrows because they fell short and into the concrete. During the first Royal Round, I shot my best untimed 20 yard shoot to date (25 points) only to learn that Timothy had shot a perfect round some days before. Still, that Royal Round should keep my score from plummeting any further for a bit. (Gwenhwyvar, Mark, [Stan], Cian, Chon, Timothy, Arnfriðr, Rowan, Teresa and me).
20th of July 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)

A nice evening on the range. I didn't shoot particularly well. Both Teresa and Cian shot their best Royal Round scores ever. (Timothy, Cian, Teresa and me).

14th of July 2005 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium / Newcomer's Night (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
Our sixth Scriptorium was well-attended; the house was over-flowing with people. Teresa talked some about what the Scriptorium does, and both Enequy and Violante showed examples of finished scrolls. Two newcomers ([Roseanne] and Alestra of Steirbach) were present, and both set to working on new projects. Most exciting was an inky accident that Alestra handled with aplomb. Following the general meeting Vittorio shared some homemade vanilla gelato. Overall, a successful evening. (Beatrix, Enequy, Alestra, Gwenhwyvar, Grainne, Violante, Vittorio, Mark, [Roseanne], Teresa and me)
12th of July 2005 Roxbury Mill Aspen Hill, Maryland
Shire Business Meeting (at Low Ravenspur)
A small number of people showed for the July business meeting. Melisande signed my papers to become the Shire's newest Minister of Arts & Sciences. Mark brought forward the idea that he might be autocrating an event in late January that would be strictly Arts & Sciences related, nothing martial. Everyone had ideas for him, and a few people voluneteered to help. Helena reported that the Shire made money at the Novice Tourney, mostly from selling drinks. There wasn't a great deal to talk about, but it lasted until 9:30 just the same. (Melisande, Helena, Michael, Aelfwynn, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Vittorio, Grainne, Mark McGroyne, Teresa and me).
9th of July 2005 Storvik Glenn Dale, Maryland
Storvik Novice & Unbelt Tourney (at Marietta Mansion) - Photos
Today, the Needwood Forest Company of Archers ran the novice tourney for the Barony of Storvik. We arrived early in the morning, and set things up in the soaking-wet grass. As the day progressed, it grew hotter and hotter. If not for Cian's Gatorade, Ethelfleda's water, and Teresa's pomegranate senkanjabin, we would have all perished by noon. Timothy presented all in the Company the new leather medallions that Cian had crafted. Teresa and Cian did well as target archery Marshals-in-Training. Teresa also won best "show mead" in the A&S competition, coming in second overall. Edonea's blueberry cordial was a big hit with the judges. The archery tourney was won by Giovanna of Roxbury Mill, a new member of the Company. (Helena, William with [Jennifer] and [Rachel], Ruaidhri, Timothy, Rowan, Cian, Giovanna, Ethelfleda, Mieszko, Finn, Joceyln, Vels, Sean and Elizabeth, Edonea, Grainne, Mark McGroyne, Gregor and Beatrix, Teresa and me, and other kingdom folk).

Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)

This evening we gathered in Timothy's garage during a rainstorm to make targets for the upcoming Novice Tourney in July. We will be using some of the targets from last year's event. The largest project we worked on was a suspended castle wall with two arrow slits for archers to shoot through. (Timothy, Mark McGroyne, Cian, Teresa and me).

26th of June 2005 Dun Carraig Nanjemoy, Maryland
Northern Atlantia War Practice (at Melwood Retreat Center) - Photos
With Gregor's prodding, I went to this practice in Southern Maryland. It was a hot, hot day with the only shade being the Storvik pavillion. I was authorized (my first) by Mieszko in Combat Archery in the late morning, and then took part in several field melees after that. I killed several people over the course of those fights until Cian's bowstring broke. This set-back gave me an excuse to escape the blazing sun and sit in the pavillion until the practice wrapped-up (shortly thereafter). Later, within the pavillion I was asked by Finn to fight alongside the Barony of Storvik during future combats. I agreed to this and was presented with a Barony tabard (traitor?). A fun but hot day. (Gregor and Beatrix, Thomas, William the Younger, Finn, Jocelyn, Sean and Elizabeth, Mieszko, Pagan, Ethelfleda, Vlad, me, and many others).

Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
Our fifth Scriptorium was attended by Beatrix (who was worked on a couple more scrolls), Gwenhwyvar (who only stopped by so that [Darwin] and [Mollie] could play), Teresa (who continues to work on her Spanish-style scroll), and myself (who practiced the Hell that is sketching Celtic-knotwork). Gregor called earlier in the day and invited me to Sunday's war practice as a Combat Archer. (as listed above).
22nd of June 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Following a Summer thunderstorm, three us met on the archery range determined to get some shooting in. We did some typical shoots, two Royal Rounds (despite more rain), and shot a couple times at swinging-spinning box that Timothy brought with. Other than the rain and spending too much time trying to find arrows in the wet grass, it was a decent evening. (Timothy, Teresa and me).
20th of June 2005 Storvik College Park, Maryland
Storvik Fighter Practice (at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church)
My second Storvik Fighter Practice went better than the first. I only had "some" trouble putting on my armor. Miguel sparred with my a small bit and then we moved to the other side of the chuch for a large melee. The Marshal-in-Charge allowed me to partake in the shield-wall (I'm not authorized yet). It was my job to stay near Jocelyn and Finn. In the first melee I survived until the end, "killing" one opponent. In the second melee, I lost my way (forgot who was on my team) and was dispatched by someone who first asked if I was still alive or not. Following the melees I practiced some fighting form/kata with marshal Sean. (Jocelyn, Finn, Brenna, William the Younger, Miguel and Violante, Henri, Pagan, Gregor and Beatrix, Sean [the Marshal], Tascious, Angus, Sean and Elizabeth, many others, and me).
17th of June 2005 Storvik Bowie, Maryland
"Festival of Knights" Archery Demonstration (at Whitemarsh Park)
Timothy, Cian, and I spent the afternoon telling Cub Scouts about medieval archery and giving timed-round archery demonstrations. Cian had a table-top arrayed with all manner of archery goods for the children to look at, pick-up, and ask questions about. I brought my chainmail to show how heavy it is, and tell a little bit about how it would not stop the arrowheads on the table. I shot very well with arrows that Teresa had loaned me, "winning" two of three of the demonstration shoots. On the last of the three shoots, I shot six out of eight arrows into the yellow at approximately 20 yards. (Timothy, Cian, and me)
16th of June 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Another nice evening at the range. I shot poorly, again, but at least it was fun. At the end of practice, Timothy set-up a zig-zagging path of 5 points. Each archer was given 5 seconds at each spot (25 seconds total), at which time the marshal would call out "move". At that time, you had to move to the next spot and shoot as many arrows as you could. We did this twice, and was only able to get off six arrows each time, a third of which hit the half circle target. (Timothy, Mark McGroyne, Teresa and me).

Shire Business Meeting (at Low Ravenspur)
A goodly number of people showed for the June business meeting, including the Baron and Baroness of Storvik who showed to express their apologies for inadvertantly taking the Shire's event date this coming fall. In exchange, they offered the Shire the chance to run one of their events, such as Yule Revel. We also took the opportunity to coordinate events for the coming year. During the course of the meeting, I offered to be the newest Minister of Arts & Sciences for the Shire. Istvan immediately offered to be a Deputy. Nothing of course will be official without the proper warranting paperwork. I also learned of a new weekly House Oldcastle fighter practice beginning tomorrow evening, which is much closer for me than Storvik's practice. (Melisande, Michael, Sean and Elizabeth, Istvan and Elisabetha with [Wee Ian], Genevieve (Not-the-Cook), Aelfwynn, Violante, Gwenhwyvar, Vittorio, Theodora, Grainne, Mark McGroyne, Teresa and me).

Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A hot morning on the range began with a hornet sting while tying-up the back-cloth. Shortly thereafter, one of the archers decided it best to knock down and smash the hive. I shot poorly most of the morning. Newcomer to the range [Sue] and her son [Greg] however shot very, very well. Teresa got her first look at the new arrows Gregge had made for her. (Gregge, Mark McGroyne, Saethryth with Grygg, Teresa and me).

Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
Our fourth Scriptorium was attended by Beatrix (who was worked on a couple scrolls she had brought), Enequy (who was working on an inter-Kingdom scroll), Gwenhwyvar (whose calligraphy is looking much better), Teresa (who continues to work on her Spanish-style scroll), and myself (who blocked out the draft on vegetable parchment for the first backlog scroll of the scriptorium). (as listed above).

Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A pleasant evening despite a blisteringly hot day. We used the stream butt and did not lose any arrows, that is the good news. I shot pretty poorly, that's the other news. Teresa shot very well, and made many comments to the effect that she wished there was some scoring going on. Timothy seems interested in having a scoring Royal Round at future Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practices. (Timothy, Ethelfleda, Teresa and me).

Atlantia University - Spring (at the Piney Creek School) - Photos
A long twisting ride through the Appalachians brought us to University LXV.  I was pleased to find that none of my re-registered classes (Tristan's illumination class was dropped earlier) were cancelled. I took courses: "Soul Stealing for Beginners (SCA Portraiture)" with Bardulf Rauen, "Thrown Weapons" with Juan Carlos Castille de Coronado, "The Real English Yew Longbow" with Viscount Karl Helwig, "Understanding Rank & Title" with Lady Aliénor de Narbonne, "Court Etiquette" also with Lady Aliénor de Narbonne, and a very interesting "Knights of Malta" with Nicholas de Wauerley.  I'm not sure how far I have to go, but I should now have 17 credits!  Teresa de Çaragoça was presented her Award of Arms by Queen Denise at court (see Photos). Teresa also saw her first submitted scroll being awarded to someone else. (Grainne and Grifin, Enequy and Juliane, Teresa and me, and other kingdom folk).

Bardic Period Night (at Istvan's)
A quiet evening at the home of Istvan and Elisabetha de Isl. We were introduced to newcomer [Roseanne], [Wee Ian], and entertained by the Jewish merchant [Nicholas] and his disobedient servant [Damien]. Much was discussed. We learned that Robert the Weaver had moved from the Shire to the Middle Kingdom, we talked about who might want to be the next Minister of Arts & Sciences, and we talked about future events for the Shire (including a University and Duke's Day). All of this was discussed while drinking ale and feasting on stew and gingerbreads (provided by Rose). (Istvan and Elisabetha with [Damien] and [Ian], [Nicholas], Mark McGroyne, [Rose], Teresa and me)
23rd of May 2005 Storvik College Park, Maryland
Storvik Fighter Practice (at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church)
My first Storvik Fighter Practice went OK. I had minimal trouble strapping on my newly completed armor, despite forgetting my gambeson(s). William loaned me a long white tunic to use instead. Talked with Randulf and Vels at length about fighting, armor, etc. William sparred with me for a while, and gave me tips on shield use and sword style. The new armor fits pretty well, even though I used the wrong arm-piece for my sword-arm (thanks to Vels for noticing that "after" my sparring). Ryryd talked to me briefly about combat archery (2nd person to do so), and Vels suggested I try yeoman archery (make that 3). (Randulf, Vels, Jocelyn, Acelina, Brenna, Ryryd and Anna, William the Younger and children, and me).

Armoring Workshop (at William the Younger's)
Following archery practice, we spent a very nice afternoon in William the Younger's workshop. Because no-one else showed for the workshop, we spent the entire day getting my armor ready for fighting.  In this one afternoon, William and I sized and strapped a pair of cuisse and knees, a pair vambrace and elbows, and a pair of spaulders and torso. At the end of the day it dawned on me that with a full suit of armor, I had no more excuses to avoid the Storvik practice. William and Teresa shortly thereafter chimed in with similar "encouragement". We'll see what tomorrow brings. (William the Younger, Teresa and me).

Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A pleasant morning of archery, even if I did shoot very, very badly. Teresa and I took [Darwin] to his first (and possibly last) archery practice. We took turns doing Royal Rounds and then left while everyone else continued with IKAC scoring. Timothy showed everyone his new longbow. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Mark McGroyne, Timothy, William the Younger, Teresa and me).
20th of May 2005 Lochmere Annapolis, Maryland
On Target (on Troll Haven Lane, Annapolis)
We finally made it to an "On Target", which is probably the region's most popular annual archery competition. Many, many people showed for a day of target archery. I helped marshal some practice rounds before the day's competition began. The crowd was split into four groups, with myself, Cian, Gregor, Drugo (who hit the silver bells), and Ryryd following marshal Baron Aelfgar of Lochmere. Gregor and I shot perfect rounds on the Hounds & Crossbowman shoot, showing well for the Needwood Forest Company of Archers. I shot fairly well for the day, and only lost a few arrows to the water and high weeds (some of which may be found later). We had to leave early to attend to the dog, so I don't know what the outcome was. With Ryryd and Anna moving soon to the Barony of Loch Salann in the Kingdom of Artemisia, it may well have been our last event with them. I did meet some people including Aelfgar, Reese of Bright Hills, and Thomas. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Cian, Drugo, Enequy and Juliane, Ryryd and Anna, Edonea, Gregor, Ulric and Ethelfleda, Teresa and me, and other kingdom folk).
15th of May 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A small and rainy morning at the range. I shot very poorly. Mark McGroyne shot not at all since he is still insearch of a bowstring that fits. We ended early and loitered in the lot for a bit while Gregge fashioned a new string for Mark. Gwenhwyvar's cookie box was opened (due to the cancellation of the Needwood Forest Company of Archers luncheon) and there was much rejoicing. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Mark McGroyne, [Stan], Teresa and me).
12th of May 2005 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
Our third Scriptorium was well-attended. Mark McGroyne and Vittorio worked on their calligraphy. Teresa continued work on her Spanish-style scroll. Gwenhwyvar did some scroll/illumination research for the Scriptorium's first project. I finished my first scroll (the "H"), which Enequy seems to want to complete the calligraphy for. (Mark McGroyne, Gwenhwyvar, Vittorio, Teresa and me).
11th of May 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Timothy marshalled the second unofficial practice this week. I did not partake because of a sore neck and shoulder and instead I sat at the back of the range with [Darwin] (who was enjoying goose-treats!) and talked with Beatrix. (Gregor and Beatrix, Timothy, Teresa and me).
7th of May 2005 Bright Hills Street, Maryland
Spring Crown Tournament (at Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation)
This weekend I returned to Broad Creek for the first time in about twenty years. We gathered to see who would be the next heirs of the Kingdom of Atlantia. Many people from the Shire came to watch William the Younger test himself on the list field. William did very well, winning at least two bouts, but in the end Janos of Cyddlain Downs won the tourney (for the second time) for his lady, Rachel Wallace. This was also [Darwin]'s first official event. The beagle even got to meet Queen Denise (and about half the assembled kingdom-folk). I spoke some with "Badger" about sharpening my scramasaex, and Veils about viking armor and fighting. It was a bright warm day and a lot of fun. (William the Younger, Enequy, Grainne, Rebekkah, Rachel, Mark McGroyne, Gwenhwyvar, Miguel, Michael and Melisande, Pagan Grendel, Teresa and me, and other kingdom folk).

Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Timothy marshalled our first unofficial practice this week. He also won the first Gregge Math Shoot against myself, Teresa, and Mark McGroyne. If it had been a Royal Round, I would have scored over 60 points. *drat, drat, drat!* Timothy brought a variety of small targets to try and get us to concentrate on smaller areas rather than the larger rings. (as listed above).
28th of April 2005 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
Our second Scriptorium was attended by fewer people, but much was accomplished. I'm getting closer to finishing my "H", Enequy worked hard on his Arrow scroll, Vittorio tried his hand with his new left-handed nibs, Gwenhwyvar graduated to bristol board for her calligraphy and Teresa began painting her new Spanish-style scroll. In addition, Enequy explained to us about his Basque-ish courting of a woman at the upcoming Crown Tourney. Another scriptorium passed, and no word from Chon. (as listed above). [120]

Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Timothy marshalled the practice again this week, though Gregge and Gwenhwyvar managed to show following their trip to Mexico. It was a cold and drizzly morning. I shot one of my better (50 pts.) Royal Rounds of the year (which isn't saying a whole lot). (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Timothy, Annie, Teresa and me).
17th of April 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A half-dozen archers met this day under the marshalling of Timothy of Shaftesbury. We completed two Royal Rounds and two rounds of the Deputy Earl Marhsal's Seasonal Challenge. I did somewhat better than last week on the Royals but wasn't up to the Challenge. Tim of course, seemed to shoot everything pretty well. We all pretty much hate Tim at this point. There was some discussion of proposed Needwood awards: The Order of the Green Shroud and the Order of the S-Hook. (Timothy, Mark, Ulric and Ethelfleda, Teresa and me).
13th of April 2005 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scriptorium (at Teresa and Æþelwine's )
Previously listed as the "Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night", Teresa and I hosted our first Shire event, inviting Shirefolk and friends for an evening of calligraphy and illuminaton. The turn-out was larger than expected and required two tables. During the gathering, Enequy suggested we begin researching who in the Shire is awaiting a scroll, and begin working through that list one or two at a time. Enequy spent most of evening teaching Gwenhwyvar, Mark, and Vittorio proper calligraphic technique while he worked on the Lochmere Arrow case inscription. Teresa and I dutifully painted our respective projects. All seemed to go fine, despite the dog chewing-up my blue card, ah well. (as listed above).
10th of April 2005 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A small number of archers convened on the field to throw arrows at the archery butt. My own performance was less than stellar owing partly to this being my first practice in about four months. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Timothy, [Annie], Teresa and me).
2nd of April 2005 Lochmere Annapolis, Maryland
Atlantia Spring Coronation of Robert and Denise (at Elks Camp Barrett)
A nice site but much too much rain. The hall was too crowded for us enter in the morning so we saw all but a glimpse of the last court of Janos and Rachel. Following this, we set-up a table in the hall just in time to avoid the downpour. The rain continued all day long. Having planned on a day of archery we did not have much to do and spoke at length with the shire folk that stopped by. Vittorio and Teresa ate homemade candied ginger and marzipan. The evening court was entertaining with Keegan and Cuan being summoned forward and sent to separate corners (places of honor as Ruaidhri explained it) for being boisterous in the back of the hall. A Pelican and some other awards later and it was time for a wonderful feast produced by the three "giants". After a brief evening respite, the rain returned and a charitable gentlemen helped tow the car from the mud. (William the Younger, Edonea, Ignacio, Grainne, Rebekkah, Rachel, Mark McGroyne, Gwenhwyvar, Miguel and Violante, Michael and Melisande, Pagan Grendel, Aulfdisa, Vittorio, Ryryd and Anna, Beatrix, Teresa and me, and other kingdom folk).
30th of March 2005 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Brewers' Workshop (at Chon's)
A small group gathered for the final meeting at Chon's, who is leaving the Roxbury Mill area for the Bright Hills. We racked off a carboy of mead started in Decemeber into wine bottles and then divided the golden treasures among those that showed. Teresa and Gwenhwyvar filled the bottles while Eoghan and Æthelwine corked and set them aside. Supposedly, the mead should be ready by Pennsic, this coming August. (Chon, Gwenhwyvar, Eoghan, Teresa and me).
26th of March 2005 Storvik Upper Marlboro, Maryland
Barony of Storvik Investiture (at the Marlboro Volunteer Fire Department)
A medium-sized hall was quickly filled (beyond the fire code limits?) with people claiming seats and a handful of tables. Everyone was gathered to see the departing Baroness Johanna and welcome the new Baron and Baroness of Storvik, Sean de la Mare and Elizabeth Harlyn. Ruaidhri sang a wonderful ode to Baroness Johanna, Terrible and Fair. Also appearing were the King and Queen, Janos and Rachel. In this, their second to last court many awards are handed down, including a Pelican. Edonea won another competition, this time for her cordial. Without a table to call our own, we sat, ate, and drank all day until feast, and then continued to do so with a table. We sat with James of Windmasters Hill, and Melisande and Michael of Ravenspur. (William the Younger, Edonea, Ignacio, Grainne, Mark McGroyne, Michael and Melisande, James, Vittorio, Rhiryd and Anna, Gregor and Beatrix, Teresa and me, and other kingdom folk).
19th of March 2005 Highland Foorde Hagerstown, Maryland
Fellowship of the Moose (at the Wilson Ruritan)
Shoot, shoot, shoot. This was our first opportunity to shoot now that winter is easing off. It was my first archery in about three months. Seigfried ran the archery competition which was quickly dominated by Seamus. There were a variety of shoots including long distance, clay pigeons, and Easter eggs. The weather was good and a fair number of people showed. We did not stay for feast. (Ignacio, Seamus, Seigfried, Timothy, Edonea, Teresa and me, and several others).
10th of February 2005 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
An unusually small crowd showed at Chon's. To our surprise however, Ignacio was there working on his calligraphy for the Queen's challenge. He has come at Gwenhwyvar's request to give pointers on calligraphy and illumination. Gwenhwyvar however stayed home sick. Chon worked on the letter "O", I painted some more borders on my letter "H" and Teresa finised her "D" (or is it a "P"?). (Chon, Ignacio, Teresa, and me).
